- How can I best protect my apple trees?
Developing a spray routine to prevent insect infestations is the best approach to protecting your apple trees against insect damage to the fruit. The spray schedule is dictated by the weather and growth of the fruits during the growing season.
- What kind of sprays do you use?
There are several types of sprays that can be applied to your apple tree, depending on the types of pests you are trying to control. Some sprays are used for prevention and some are meant to immediately control a visible infestation.
Dormant Oil/Lime Sulphur
Dormant oil (horticultural oil applied during the dormant season for apple trees) is an insecticide used to control overwintering pests. In particular, dormant oil targets aphids, spider mites and scale insects. It is applied during the dormant season to avoid harming beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs. The ideal timing for application is before the leaf buds start to open. Lime Sulphur is often one of the main ingredients in Dormant Oil and is useful in preventing apple maggots.
Cueva (Copper Octanoate)
Cueva spray is used to control fire blight, apple scab, anthracnose, sooty blotch and other diseases that can affect your fruit. Cueva can be applied at 5-10 day intervals and should be limited to 10 applications per year.
Entrust is an organic spray, with active ingredient Spinosad, is active on several important insects. Spinsoad is produced from naturally occurring bacteria (Saccharpolyspora spinosa). Entrust is used for control of tree leafrollers, budmoth larvae, codling moth and thrips and must be limited to a maximum of 3 applications per season.
Pheromone bands are not sprays but are hung in the canopy of the tree to target codling moth and apple clearwing moth. These pheromone bands work by preventing male moths from finding female moths for mating. The bands are applied to the apple trees before the first moths fly in the spring.
Please note that in addition to the solutions listed above, there are other kinds of sprays that are available to target these and other pests if they become a concern. Please feel free to contact our office so we can assist you with those situations as well.
